The Ultras Pool Tournament 2006 was an event that everyone had been looking forward to for some time, with some members putting in hours of training before the main event. Ambassador Pool Hall was the venue for an occasion that will go down in RU history, on a glorious day of sunshine in the Granite City.
A few last minute “injuries” to some of the favourites for the coveted RU Pool Trophy (Kendo, THE PRO), meant that the title was wide open for anyone who could prove themselves worthy
Each match was played out of three frames with the winner progressing to the next round. Players who were knocked out in the first round found themselves in the “Losers Tournament” – basically a tournament for losers.
First round:After a few prematch drinks to settle the nerves the tournament began. Charlie defeated Laura in a match dogged by controversy, with claims of cheating from the young lass however this was not witnessed by the referee – who was probably at the bar. Flockiee then took care of Leisky with a comprehensive 2 – 0 victory, and with a similar scoreline Emma despatched Leisky’s mate. After a slow start Pie eliminated the “fans favourite” Jimmer with a deserved win. The first round shock was the exit of Shabba at the hands of Jet, who then joined Jimmer and sulked all day. Shabbas cries for a "Steward's enquiry" were ignored. Iceman fought his way back after going a frame down to Banz, followed by Fowler who defeated Tucky in a hard contested game to complete the first round matches.
Quarter-finals:The quarter-finals was where the real players had a chance to shine after eliminating the chaff in the 1st round. Charlie clinched a close game with Flockiee, running out a 2 – 1 win but there was more controversy with Flockiee describing the winner as “A cheating c*nt”. Pie knocked out the dark horse for the tournament, Emma with 2 quick frames – it was clear that he could go all the way to the final. Jet triumphed over Tasia 2 -1, and the Iceman fell at the hands of Fowler in what seemed like the most drawn out contest ever.
Semi-finals:In the first semi-final Pie romped home with a 2 – 0 victory, eliminating Charlie and securing himself a place in the RU Pool Tournament 2006 final without dropping a single frame. The next semi-final would see Jet take on Fowler, but Jet was nowhere to be seen – it seemed he had gone to play a different game altogether!! The gap left was filled by the Iceman who was ‘delighted’ with his backdoor entry. However he was unable to learn from his first encounter with Fowler and lost 2 -1.
Final:It all came down to this, two worthy finalists but there could only be one winner of the inaugural RU Pool Trophy. Pie managed to edge out Fowler in a tense game between the pair to lift the trophy (2 – 1). Fowler was left disappointed but was proud of his efforts earning himself the silver medal.
The 3rd / 4th play off between Ice and Charlie ended with a 2- 1 victory for Charlie, in a nailbiting finish where it looked as though neither wanted to pot the black ball. After some ungentlemanly conduct from the Iceman, it was a fair result.
The losers tournament was where the real battle was – players were desperate to avoid the title of ‘biggest loser’. Tucky defeated Jimmer in one of the most flukey games of the day. Shabba then knocked out Banz in his first win of the competiton. Defeats for Laura and Tasia led to a showdown betweeen Tucky and Shabba. Tucky won, however things turned sour with the loser describing the winner as a “Tink”. The losers however felt like they were all winners, but the fact of the matter was thet were losers.
Well done to Pie, the 1st winner of the RU pool tournament and thanks to all who turned up to show their support for the RU and help raise a bit of cash in the process.
